In 1999 innovatis AG introduced a novelty to the public, the Cedex, an automatic cell counter based on the established trypan blue method. Meanwhile hundreds upon hundreds of Cedex instruments have been sold and Cedex has established itself as a standard worldwide.

Process monitoring and control posed the next challenge after automating the actual cell count. In 2000 innovatis presented Cedex Remote Control – the first trypan blue cell monitoring system worldwide integrating process automation. Automation service providers were now able to easily integrate the Cedex remote control into their systems. The previously solely hand operated Cedex was now 100% automated controllable. The remote control provides the customer not only with fully automated control, but also with automatic control of cell culturing processes at the same time. For the first time the number of samples processed could be increased to 240 samples per day. Until then the process schedule in cell culture handling systems was rather rigid and inflexible, but now it could be monitored and controlled in a dynamic way. Increased productivity and more effective application of resources presented advantages for users.

Due to the fact that Cedex is the worldwide only entirely remote-controlled system for cell analysis based on trypan blue staining, it is currently being integrated into the system process control and -monitoring of three leading manufacturers of factory automation machinery. So far, more than 50 satisfied customers benefit from integrated process solutions using the Cedex Remote Control.
